The list is compiled from the US consumer safety commission. Recommended guidelines for infants under 12 months of age. These practices are recommended to reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)

BABY

mini heartBaby should be placed on their back in a crib with firm, tight-fitting mattress.

heart1 Do not put comforters, pillows, quilts, sheepskins, pillow-like bumper pads or pillow-like stuffed toys in the crib with the baby.

luv Consider using a baby sleeper instead of a blanket.

love If using a blanket, place the baby with their feet to the foot of the crib. Tuck a thin blanket around the mattress, covering baby only as high as their chest.

baby love Use only a fitted bottom sheet made specifically for the crib.

CRIB

mothers Firm tight-fitting mattress so baby can not get trapped between mattress and crib.

new-born No missing, loose, broken or improperly installed screws, hardware or brackets on crib or mattress support.

love my baby No more than 2 3/8 inches (about soda can width) between crib slats / rungs so baby's head or body can not fit through. Check for cracked missing slats.

nursery No corner posts over 1 1/16th inch high so baby's clothing can not catch.

hearts No cutouts in the headboard or foot board so a baby's head can not get trapped.

Mesh-sided cribs / playpens

nurse love Mesh less than 1/4 inch in size, smaller than buttons on baby's clothing.

baby luv No tears in mesh, loose threads or holes that could entangle baby.

baby care Mesh is securely attached to top rail and the floor plate.

heart Top rail cover has no tears or holes.

mini-hearts Check for loose, missing or exposed staples.
